Mission critical push to talk (MCPTT) represents those capabilities that align with the requirements of public safety organizations as part of their rapid-response programs, specifically voice communication.  These include features such as high availability and reliability, minimal latency, the ability to support conferencing or direct communication, clear call quality, security, encryption,etc.  MCPTT is critical to ensuring that emergency calls go through with a clear call quality.

Historically, non-compliance and incompatibilities between vendors hampered MCPTT. According to the 3GPP Global Initiative, in 2016 application standards for MCPTT on LTE were established in the 3GPP Release 13, but continue to evolve to a consistent methodology for the protocol.
